We have all heard of people making fortunes selling old collectibles on eBay, but this is not the only way to earn money on eBay. In fact, you can make money on eBay without selling a thing. This is how you do it.
Five years ago, I remember reading a story in Fortune Magazine about someone who made a one million dollars on eBay by selling old antiques that I would never have guessed anyone would buy. But, eBay essentially makes your marketplace the whole Internet-connected world and that is quite a lot of customers.
After reading this story, I recall heading into my basement with a lot of enthusiasm. What could I sell that would make me one million dollars? Well, I have an old bat, a few ball gloves, lots of old records that I never use, an old washer/dryer that is out of service, and a manual lawn mower that I know will never cut another blade of grass.
Then, I headed to my parents house. Here was my rational: They have lived longer and thus should have more collectibles. I found even more items there: vintage turntables and stereo sets, old vacuums, industrial tools, and many other items. In the end, I visited every member of my family and gathered all the items that I could in my pursuit of making a whole lot of money selling items on eBay.
While I was thinking about how to spend my future windfall of money, I placed each of these items up on eBay. I sold every one of them and made a very paltry amount of $1,000. Considering the time that I had put into this, my hourly rate probably came up well short of minimum wage. And, frankly, it was a very large amount of work packaging and sending all of the items (especially the washer/dryer!).
Down but not out, I realized the value of the eBay marketplace but also realized that selling on eBay was simply not for me. It required a lot of work, a lot of physical product, and very minimal returns. I needed another way to make money on eBay.
I discovered this new way of making money on eBay when I read about the eBay affiliate program. In this program, you make money not by selling eBay products but by promoting eBay products through your website. Very interesting, I thought.
I had just one problem: I had no website. Well, with the same enthusiasm I had when I first went down to the basement, I learned everything there was to know about setting up a website. When I was done with it, my website looked great and I received lots of compliments.
But I had no visitors. So, I learned how to promote my website using various promotional tools. Gradually (it did take awhile), people started coming to my website and I then directed them to relevant, topical auction pages on eBay.
In this way, I made money as an eBay affiliate. Since then, I have created many websites which all direct traffic to eBay’s website and I make good money as an eBay affiliate.
Who would have known? You can actually earn money on eBay without selling a thing!
