So you have decided that you like the idea of the affiliate marketing lifestyle and want to set up your own affiliate marketing business for minimal capital outlay. But which affiliate programs do you choose and why?

Once you get to this point, the most likely next step is to search online for ‘affiliate marketing programs’ or something similar. This is your first big mistake. You see, before you know it, you will be entering the maze of companies offering their own affiliate programs along with affiliate networks who are companies that run affiliate programs on behalf of multiple companies plus a whole pile of offers promising you affiliate marketing riches and ‘secret formulas’ for success.

If this is the route you decide you decide to take, good luck. But be prepared to spend the next few years going round in circles and getting nowhere fast. And then deciding that affiliate marketing isn’t going to make you any money and that the whole thing is just one big scam.

Actually, it’s not a scam, you really can build an online business via affiliate marketing that delivers a full-time income over time but only if you approach it in the right way. That is, you need to treat it as a business and have a clear strategy and business plan.

This all starts with deciding what you are going to sell and who you are going to sell to. In other words, what is your market? Are you going to sell DIY products to DIY enthusiasts, pet products to pet lovers, finance solutions to people in debt or whatever. This is all about discovering your niche and starts with understanding you market rather than searching for products to sell.

Let’s say that you decide to sell pet products to pet lovers as this is an area that interests you. The next thing you have to do is research your market. And you will of course find that there are lots of different pets and lots of different products related to all those pets. And there are some established companies that have already created online pet superstores. How are you going to compete with companies like that? As a small business you need to focus on a sub-niche. Maybe this means just dogs, just cats, food products, pet health products, pet accessories.

Keep researching the pet arena until you find your first sub-niche. What you are looking for is a sub-niche that when you run it through the search engine tells you that a significant number of people search this area but there are limited sponsored links or paid advertising relating to the search area.

Why?

Because even if you build the best website hardly anybody is going to find you via a search engine for at least six months unless you are paying to be there via sponsored links. And the less competitive your search terms, the lower your cost-per-click. However, finding a low cost-per-click is next to useless if there are not a significant number of people searching for information in that niche or sub-niche.

This is your first and biggest challenge but also the one that will help you build a successful online business. You want a sub-niche and related search terms that have limited pay-per-click costs but also has a relatively high number of searches. The next thing you need to do is make sure there are products in that niche or sub-niche that can be sold as an affiliate marketer. Just run a web wide search for ‘your niche +a ffiliate products/programs’. At this stage you are not selecting specific products just making sure that there are products available for you to sell as an affiliate marketer.
