Recently I heard an interesting story about a young man who had been selected to sing the national anthem at a baseball game. He was thrilled at the opportunity and thought of what a great chance it was for him to have his moment of fame in front of a huge audience.
He practiced his heart out and when the time came for him he sang his flawlessly and did what he thought was an outstanding performance. What had him dismayed was the crowd wasn’t looking at him during the song but down the left field line. He wondered what were they looking at and realized it was the American flag. At that moment he realized the whole opportunity wasn’t about him or his song but about the flag, his country and America’s greatest pastime. He learned a valuable lesson that day that we, as affiliate and article marketers need to remember every day, it’s not about us but our customer.
The profession of marketing requires that we connect with our customers. We need to learn what they want and ingeniously figure out a way to give it to them. It isn’t about what we want but what they want. Until we learn this valuable lesson, we will struggle and work harder and harder and miss the target.
